Fox Hollow Farm Notes
Each Thursday we will post the latest farm notes written by Fox Hollow Farm staff. Here are this week's notes from Kim and Mary Kay: FREE WORKSHOP:
NEW PERENNIALS Many of you are familiar with Agastache 'Blue Fortune' -- the Giant Hyssop -- we consider it one of the finest perennials! In the spring, the strong new stalks shoot upward to 3' tall, clothed with fuzzy licorice-scented leaves. From early spring through summer, the stems are topped with hundreds of large bottlebrush, blue-lavender flowers that attract a stunning array of pollinators, especially butterflies!
And to top that we now have the new and exciting vivid red hybrid, Agastache 'Red Fortune'. Expect the same long July to September bloom. Soft carmine red flower spikes on stiff stems are a tad shorter than 'Blue Fortune' at 18-24" above the same minty foliage. Drought-tolerant, a butterfly and hummingbird magnet, great for cutting, and easy-to-grow, 'Red Fortune' may also prove deer-resistant.
And for those of you who lean towards the yellows, we have two new releases -- Scabiosa 'Lemon Sorbet' and Baptisia sphaerocarpa (False Indigo). Scabiosa 'Lemon Sorbet' is an exciting new form with a compact habit and butter-yellow blooms all summer. Great for garden or container growing. Baptisia sphaerocarpa has a lovely, buttery yellow bloom. Rounded blue-green leaves adorn the 18" tall x 18" wide clumps. In mid- to late Spring, the clumps are topped with stupendous 12-15" tall spires of pure yellow "lupine-like" flowers, followed in late summer by curious spherical tan seed pods. You will love this heat and drought tolerant US native in your perennial border!
And the hottest plant offered at the Farm this week is Tradescantia 'Sweet Kate'. It took our breath away when we first saw it! This new import from the UK is taking the gardening world by storm! The brilliant golden foliage on this 2' plant (brightest in full sun) is highlighted with a procession of deep blue flowers from late Spring until Fall. Even more, if flowering slows, behead the plant and it, just like an alien, will start to regrow and flower all over again. Each plant is a true masterpiece! And there's many more new arrivals to see: the hardy orchid, Bletilla striata 'Alba' for part shade; a clove fragranced pink, Dianthus 'Laced Hero'; two forms of ice plant, Delosperma; a very crested leaf edged Ligularia, now named Farfugium; a dwarf form of Rudbeckia 'Goldstrum', called 'Viette's Little Suzy'; the evergreen, lacy 'Alaska Fern'; and a fine selection of Hollyhocks.
THE HYDRANGEAS ARE HERE!
A dwarf, compact version of the big leaf Hydrangea is the serrata family of Hydrangeas. These are quite elegant and sport the lace cap flower form. We are most delighted to offer Hydrangea serrata 'Kiyosumi'. It grows 3' by 3', and sports deep purple leaves as it opens in the spring. It's flower is white with a bright red edge! OUR NEW PERENNIALS DISPLAY AREA OPENS
We have already brought out many of our grasses as they fill in with full new growth; a nice selection of the dwarf Sir Robert Azaleas, wonderfully fragrant Buddlejas (Butterfly Bush), Japanes Kousa Dogwoods & a wide selection of Heucheras -- the bright cherry red 'Cherries Jubilee' is our favorite! And it isn't even Summer, yet! The Daylilies are still to come! Happy Gardening! More Fox Hollow Farm notes:
