Fox Hollow Farm Notes

Each Thursday we will post the latest farm notes written by Fox Hollow Farm staff. Here are this week's notes from Kim and Mary Kay:

Viburnum
Viburnum

It's Mother's Day this weekend. Make it a Garden day! Don't just take Mom out to breakfast...take her out to the garden and fill her world with flowers and greenery! Then she can enjoy Mother's Day all summer long. And what could be better than easy-to-care-for perennials that come back and bloom every year!

Of course, Kim's favorite is the delightful Lilac 'Miss Kim'. And Mary Kay is showcasing our Viburnum that are starting to come into bloom, just in time to fill your yard with their amazing scent.

Epimedium
Epimedium

Many varieties of plants are bursting into bloom at the Farm. For superior beauty and bloom the 4 color types of Epimedium can be rated outstanding this week. The dainty, clumping variety, Epimedium Roseum 10", with its rare soft pink blooms, is excellent for a specimen plant in conjunction with a dwarf Astilbe like Perkeo. The deep lavender "Fairy Wings" of Epimedium 'Lilafee' 12" hover just above its beautiful clumping rounded heart-shaped leaves.

The taller and spreading forms of Epimedium Versicolor, a yellow, and Epimedium 'Orange Queen' tower by about 10" above the clumping forms. Both of these "Fairy Wings" or "Sea Anchors" are excellent to plant beneath shrubs or to cover an expanse of ground in a partly shaded to full shade area.

Primula
Primula

Most of the double flowering Primulas are in full bloom this week. All the colors of rose pink, white, deep red with tiny touches of white on the edges, and deep red with speckles of white on the inner petals are demonstrating their unique beauty. Primulas like rich, moisture retentive soil. They do like sun at this time of year. So it is good to plant them under deciduous plants or just at the shady edge of woodland. All that I planted from the Farm last year survived this winter, and are just beginning to flower in my garden.

The evergreen leaves of the green leaf Iberis 'Snowflake' and the new gold leaf Iberis 'Golden Candy' are smothered in white blossoms. Both require full sun.

The Swallows have begun to gather material for their nests. They select pieces of straw and grasses from the fields. Also they hope for mud puddles near the barn to use to construct their nest. Come and watch these master builders while you browse through our lovely plants.

Look for our ad in Newsday in the special gardening section this weekend and you'll find a nice coupon to use on the Farm. And don't forget to sign up for our next workshop, "Garden Design with Perennials", by Melanie Vassallo on Tuesday May 13.

Happy Gardening!
