Fox Hollow Farm Notes

Each Thursday we will post the latest farm notes written by Fox Hollow Farm staff. Here are this week's notes from Mary Kay:

The Hellebores are pushing up wonderful flowers in a rainbow of colors. Its best to select these when you can compare various colors and find the one that really speaks to you! AND, even more hellebores in bloom will be at the farm this week.

Some of the perennials in larger pots from last year that are pushing out strong, leafy growth today include: the Achilleas (yarrow), Rudbeckia 'Herbstsonne', and the sweet dwarf form of Aruncus aethusifolius. The latter is excellent for edging paths and borders in part shade.

The many color varieties of double-flowered Primula are on the tables between the barn and the shed. Also Iberis 'Gold Candy' are also be on the tables with its white flowers and yellow-evergreen foliage. Another gold leaf plant arrival is Myosotis 'Gold N' Sapphire' ('For-Get-Me-Not'). It has bright, blue flowers over a gold leaf.

For the first time we are pleased to offer Alstroemeria 'Sweet Laura'. This is a fairly recent HARDY hybrid Peruvian lily developed at the U of Connecticut. It blooms heavily from June to September. It grows 3' tall and prefers full sun to light shade. Its fragrant yellow flowers are spotted and bushed with dark red.

Personally, I am looking forward to bringing 2 very special varieties home on Saturday. Several Cyclamen coum are at the top of my list along with at least one Hellebore cyclophyllus. The Cyclamen do well in my garden planted near the base of deciduous trees with real humusy soil. Hopefully they will be showing leaves, but even bare pot, I want to bring some home, because they are not easy to find. Hellebore cyclophyllus is one of the better green-flowered hellebores, and we find the green flower forms enchanting. This is another difficult plant to find locally.

Happy Gardening!
